Tourism economic survey of AML 2005 in Härnösand

How many tourists visit archives, museums and libraries? What do they mean for the local tourist economy? This is what we tried to find out during the summer and autumn of 2005.
AML Resource-center together with Mid Sweden Tourist-center made a tourist economic survey according to the tourist economic model,
 audience
TEM, on Regional archive, The County Museum and the Combined Library, all in Härnösand during the summer and autumn of 2005. More than 1200 inquiries were made with tourists, mostly as interviews.
TEM is a program to make economic efficiency estimations easy. TEM measure the tourist consumption and study how expenses divide between transport, shopping, restaurant, activity, lodging and food.

What did we find out in our TEM survey?

As a total nearly 500 000 persons visited the institutions during 2005. These visitors can be devided into two categories:

1. Tourists with AML- institutions as main purpose for there visit
For 36 000 the AML-institutions was the main purpose for visiting Härnösand . These tourists generated 14 600 guest nights. The rest passed through the town, made a stop for the day or came from a neighbouring town etc. As a total these visitors generated a turnover of 18 million SEK. Lodging and restaurants but also shopping were winners. As a total these tourists generated 19 full time employments.

2. Tourists for whom the main purpose with there visit was not AML
Nearly 80 000 persons came to the AML-institutions but also had other reasons for their visit; see family and friends, visit World Heritage Höga Kusten (High Coast), sports events etc. These visitors generated 50 000 guest nights (18000 commercial).

Merlo Castle
As a total these visitors generated a turnover of 38 million SEK and as a total 35 full time employments.

AML-tourism generates 35 full time employments in Härnösand. The institutions themselves employ 175 persons. So the AML-institutions are important for a municipality with 25 000 inhabitants.

How do we use the results:
